Massage Therapy
The role of massage therapy in the support of cancer patients is
receiving approval from organizations such as the American
Cancer Society. Comfort-oriented massage therapy may lessen the
physical and emotional effects of cancer as well as the side
effects of cancer treatment. Massage therapy has been shown to
reduce stress and induce relaxation. It may also boost the
immune system. Massage therapy for a cancer patient is different
from a deep tissue massage. It is very important that massage
therapists who work with cancer patients be specially trained in
the physiology of cancer and the special considerations for
those undergoing treatment. All massage therapists who provide
services at The Victory Center are licensed by the State of Ohio
Medical Board and have a special certification in Oncology
Massage. These steps ensure that cancer patients will receive
the safest and most effective massage possible. Benefits may
include reduced anxiety and tightness in muscles; increased
relaxation, flexibility, and ability to sleep; and enhanced
emotional well-being. During a session, the cancer patient will
disrobe as much as is comfortable, will be fully covered at all
times to maintain complete privacy, and will lie on a
comfortable massage table in a quiet room. The massage therapist
will use a hands-on approach to different areas of the body
systematically to achieve results. The cancer patient maintains
control by talking to the massage therapist about areas of
discomfort and areas to avoid touching. |
